UnreLENTing Politics

Unless you've been living under a very large, very secluded, internet/television/newspaper/mail deprived rock, you're probably aware that Monday marked the official beginning of the primary/caucus season to decide which presidential candidate will represent the two major political parties. In fact, as you read this, thousands of people in Iowa have cast their vote for whoever they believe will "Heal. Inspire. Revive," or "defeat the Washington machine" or "make America great again."

It's intriguing that just as the presidential campaign season ramps up into high gear, we are brought to the doorstep of Lent - that time during the church year where we are asked to set aside the cares and engagements of the world that we might draw close to God in prayer, fasting, introspection, and repentance. As we are being queried about, prompted toward, and shoved in the direction of political messages of discontent, change, renovation, and revolution, Christ and His Church call us to slow down, retreat, and disengage for a season - to seek the wilderness of self-denial that He might continue to work in us the change so needed in each of our lives. Over the past few months I've seen probably thousands of political signs - many in protest, often pointing fingers at every conceivable evil in the world, demanding a change to the problem. During Lent, God asks that, for a time, we bear the sign saying "I am the problem," owning up to the real possibility that I'm the one gumming up the works in God's purpose for His world.

While political engagement can be beneficial, especially as it speaks lovingly and truthfully against social injustices, and offers solutions which are wise, efficient, and creative, our work must always be fashioned around the submission to the Spirit and informed by the testimony of the Word. This Lent, as we're bombarded by increasingly caustic political rhetoric, may we seek the still, small voice found only in the presence of the Almighty. Let us turn away from hand-wringing, from divisive speech, from seeking to tear down. Instead, may we join in the self-sacrificial wounds of Christ, that His submission and faithfulness might author the same in our hearts.

SDMI Fresh start

Saturday, February 13th, 8:30 AM to 3 PM, The Bridge Church of Bloomington, CA. will host SDMI's "Fresh Start" conference with General Superintendent David Busic. (This will be his last event on our district.) The cost is $12.00 per person (lunch will be catered by In-N-Out*).  We are asking every church to pay the way for their teachers, directors, staff, and pastors as an investment in equipping them to be more faithful, committed, innovative servants in the Kingdom. Please sign up ASAP so we can plan appropriately. Sign-ups are now available HERE and at the district website under the "Events" tab!***

(Gently used Christian book donations are needed for women's ministries at Fresh Start. For every book purchased participants will receive a raffle ticket for a drawing that will take place at the close of Fresh Start.  The prize will be Dr. David Busic's book, "Perfectly Imperfect.")

*vegetarian option is available, however, those choosing the option will be forced to eat their lunch outside, 50 feet from entrances. We can't risk contamination.

District NYI Conference

The district NYI Conference will be hosted this year in conjunction with SDMI's Fresh Start Conference. Friday, February 12, beginning at 8:00 PM, teens and youth leaders from across the district will gather at Bloomington The Bridge Church, Bloomington Christian School campus, for a night of fun, fellowship, and leadership meetings. Additionally, we encourage everyone to stay for the Fresh Start conference held at the Bridge Church the following day. Seminars will be available for both youth and youth leaders. Cost for the weekend is $18 ($6 for Friday night only). Check the district NYI conference website for registration and more info.

This February, the district will be having its annual licensing and ordination interviews at our Murrieta Gateway Church. Meetings for district license renewals will be held on February 2, while new licensee and ordination interviews will be held on February 16 - please mark your calendars accordingly. All ordination candidates must have completed their ministerial studies. They also must have completed three (3) consecutive years of assigned ministry and currently be serving in an assigned role.


Dynamic Church Planting Conference

Our rescheduled DCPI conference will take place February 29th - March 3rd at Mission Church of the Nazarene.  The cost is only $35.  Three tracks will be offered: CPE (Church Planting Essentials), CPC (Churches Planting Churches) and CT (Certified Trainer).  You can start your registration on our district website.

Starting a new church is the single best method of evangelism. A new, culturally-specific or affinity-group church can make in-roads into a group that the sponsor church never could.  Just as new believers bring new spirit and life to an existing congregation, new churches breathe new life into our denomination.  Dynamic Church Planting International subscribes to the motto: "All kinds of churches for all kinds of people," and have arranged their resources accordingly.


San Diego Global Poverty Forum

The Center for International Development at PLNU is hosting the San Diego Global Poverty Forum at the Ellipse Chapel at First Church of the Nazarene on President’s Day, February 15th, starting at 2pm. This year’s theme is “What’s Working, and How Do We Know.” Leading Christian researchers will compare the efficacy of various approaches to poverty alleviation. This is a free event, but seating is limited. We recommend you register today and plan on arriving early.



Nazarene Compassionate Ministries (NCM) is looking for host sites for their student ministry teams as they work in the neighborhoods.  Here’s a wonderful evangelistic outreach opportunity for your church community.  If interested, please contact the District Office.


Monthly Reporting

Pastors, please remember that the district needs your monthly church stats reported here.  Your cooperation is greatly appreciated as it allows your D. S. to minister more effectively. Further, Rev. Taylor's reports to the general church go much better when he can send factual stats and not just recycled lyrics from his favorite Tommy Tutone song.*

*He gets a lot of sideways glances when half the churches on our district report 867 on the membership role and 5309 for avg. worship.


Women's Retreat

Please mark your calendars now for the Spring 2016 Women's Retreat on March 11-13, 2016. If you have not registered yet for Women's Retreat, time is running out! Registrations are now being accepted on a space available basis. Please send updated registration/roommate lists and any dietary restrictions or special hotel needs to Registrar Kim Smith by February 5th. Registration payments are due in full by March 1st.

Prime Time Retreat

Mark your calendars! On April 18 - 21, 2016 Murrieta Hot Springs Resort will be hosting "The Gathering" Prime Time retreat. Our speaker will be Dr. Jim Bond, former General Superintendent and PLNU president. In addition, Brain Arner will be joining us in concert Monday evening. Additional information will continue to be made available on the Prime Time retreat district webpage.


socal Roundup

Formerly known as "Caravan Roundup," the SoCal Roundup will be taking place May 20 - 22 at the Indian Hills Camp in Jamul, CA. It'll be a weekend packed with outdoor activities for all ages as well as inspiring times of praise and worship. Camp areas are available for churches interested in making this weekend a youth or family camping trip. Prices range from $30 - $57 per person for tent, cabin, or structure camping. For more information contact Janet Crow. And, remember - you don't need to have a Caravan program to participate


District Administrative Changes

  • Rev. Steve Rodeheaver (San Diego Southeast) will be stepping up as the new district secretary. Please pray for him as he enters into this little-seen-but-labor-intensive position.
  • The end of the church year has been changed to March 31. Please mark your calendars accordingly.
